Das Globe
The Earth
<b><font face="Arial,Helvetica"><font color="#FFFFFF"><font size=-1>Sorry, your viewer doesn't support embedded VRML!</font></font></font></b> <br> Today's weather!
I originally found this SatMap on a VRML globe done by Michael J. Donahue (mediastorm@pacificnet.net) A fine gentleman by the name of John Walker (kelvin@fourmilab.ch) has created a database of satellite images which are updated daily. He has a utility called EarthView which calculates an image of the earth from virtually any vantage point. Definitely worth checking out!
Note: the map is always 87K, and seems to be on a _very slow_ server. (It usually clocks in at around 500cps on my 28.8 modem. Expect it to take 3-4 minutes.)
Big Earth I've removed this file from the archives. Mainly because Dean Scott has a MUCH better Earth available for download at http://ns.southern.edu/~dascott/tutorial01/nasa-earth.htm (Check out the shading on that baby! Sweet!)

Before you download these cheesy bitmaps, I recommend you check out this site for a set of unwrapped images for virtually every planet in our Solar System: http://www.jht.cjb.net/ (And, these images are _HUGE_!!)

Big Earth - 2.8MB!
This baby has it all! Big bitmaps, and lots of 'em! This one takes a lot of memory. This includes Color, Bump, Specularity, and Luminosity maps at 1024x512 resolution. The cloud layer is rendered at 960x580
This file includes the T4000 Earth described below!

Earth T4000 Earth-T4000 - 225KB
I made this earth object years ago. (The 'T4000' indicates that this was the object used by NewTek for some transition FX on the Video Toaster 4000.) The surface image is only 16 colors, and without the clouds, it looks a lot like the old globes you used to see in 50's movies, or in the old Universal Pictures logo treatment. This object is much smaller, and the total image memory usage is 292KB, compared to 3.3MB for the object above. Note: there is no luminosity map for this object.
